Rainwater Harvesting

Water Tank

It is now viable to harvest rainwater for your whole household. This includes rainwater harvesting, storing and pumping rainwater for bathing, showering, toilet flushing, pool, laundry and irrigation. Rainwater harvesting together with other Water Rhapsody products can save up to 90% of your water bill.

Grey Water

A bath uses 120 litres and a shower 80 litres of water. When used, that water is called grey water. You pay for it, and then it all goes down the drain. Water Rhapsody Grey Water System uses this grey water to immediately irrigate your garden, saving you a substantial portion of your water bill.

What kind of droughts does South Africa experience?

A brief synopsis of drought in South Africa since 1960 -2005

Introduction

The rainfall climate of South Africa is one of great variability. Seasonal rainfall percentage deviations since 1960 demonstrate wide fluctuations about the long-term average and it is in this context that large rainfall deficits must be assessed. Between July of 1960 and June of 2004, there [...]

Why would I install a Water Tank when there is no rain?

This is a good question. Obviously a rainwater tank will not help if there is no rain at all. The thing is that most true drought occur inland whereas most of the population lives near the coast where it does rain. Sure we sometimes have dry seasons where we get below average rainfalls but even if [...]

Port Alfred set to run out of Water

The Ndlambe Municipality has intervened to stave off an impending water disaster in Port Alfred by drastically reducing the pressure in supply pipes.

The decision was taken at a crisis meeting of the Ndlambe council yesterday morning, guided by municipal experts who have warned there is less than a month of drinking water left for the Sunshine [...]

Desalination plant in Bay

SWARTKOPS has been selected as the site for a R750-million water desalination plant which forms part of Nelson Mandela Bay’s emergency drought measures. Desalination

Water and sanitation director Barry Martin told a briefing yesterday Swartkops had been selected because of its location near the old power station which would allow the use of existing infrastructure.

He said environmental studies had been accessed and discussed. No problems were foreseen in that area.

A public participation process would now get under way and preliminary designs and specifications were being prepared.

The aim is to start work in October and complete the project in May next year.

Martin warned that dam levels could drop to 32% from the current 34% by next month, adding weight to suggestions at Tuesday’s Budget and Treasury Committee meeting that the punitive tariff for the consumption of more than 15 kilolitres a month is to be hiked by a “considerable” margin. Water tariffs increasing soon!

Nelson Mandela Bay residents can expect a massive increase in punitive water tariffs, applying to consumers who use   more  than 15 kilolitre per month.

DA caucus leader: Leon de Villiers introduced an urgent motion at yesterday’s budget and treasury committee meeting, saying he had received notification on Monday evening that the municipality was poised to introduce a much [...]

“Water-shedding” in the pipeline for Grahamstown

Grocotts_jpgDue to the consistently low levels of dams in the Grahamstown area, the Makana Municipality is considering limiting water supplies in some parts of town.

Addressing a media conference on Thursday, Makana Municipal Manager Ntombi Baart said this “water-shedding” process will help the municipality to meet its demand for water supply.

She added that this process of regular water cuts would work in a similar fashion to the electricity load shedding which is occasionally carried out by Eskom.

Explaining how the municipality’s water operations sank to the level where they are “erratic” to the extent that the residents start questioning the water  quality, Baart blamed the situation on earlier municipal reports which were never addressed. R750-Million for Desalination Plant not available

Two weeks ago I posted the report that our Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs (DWEA) Minister Buyelwa Sonjica has said that her department was forging ahead with plans to supply desalinated water to Cape Town, and furthermore extract water from the Table Mountain (TM) aquifer.

This week it was reported in The Algoa Sun, that since Nelson Mandela [...]
